21 April 2008 / Intellectual Property Issues and Faith
UPDATE
Given the discussion we had two weeks ago, and the pressing need to engage actual practice, I'm postponing our discussion of citizen media for a later date (perhaps not in this class), and instead we'll focus this week on issues having to do with intellectual property, copyright (and copyleft), and helping churches lead in this arena.
In class we'll view Willful Infringement, and we'll also talk some more about the Love to Share document.
For additional reading, you could look at the Society for Cinema Studies best practices for fair use statement, the Fair(y) Use Tale, the Bound by Law comic book, the EFF FAQ's on Fair Use, and the Cost of Copyright Confusion report.
Additionally, while I do not agree with all of the opinions offered in this blog, it still gives you a lot of useful questions to think about in relation to podcasting and video streaming in church settings. (Keep in mind that they are selling a service, and therefore their opinions tend to reinforce the need for their service.)
